KEDA Update

Season's Greetings and Happy Holidays from all of us here at the Koochiching Economic Development Authority. After a glorious fall season with above-normal temperatures, winter follows its traditional form and with snow on the ground, we're assured to have a White Chrismas.

The Holidays provide the opportunity to gather with family and friends and share traditions. It is also an opportunity to look back at the events of the past year as well as look forward to the coming year. In this newsletter we'll update you on several of the projects that are moving forward in International Falls and Koochiching County. Also, we'll look at a rural family that turned a passion for music into a musical oddessy that has carried them far beyond the borders of Koochiching County...

BACKUS COMMUNITY CENTER
Located in the heart of International Falls, two landmark buildings stand the test of time and are testimony to representing the true meaning of community. The Alexander Baker (AB) School Building built in 1912 (38,472 sq. ft), and the E.W. Backus Junior High School Building (72,801 sq. ft.) built in 1936 were connected on the same site and served thousands of school children until they were closed by the district in 1991. The Backus building features a unique Art Deco style and has a 1,000-seat auditorium which has served as the main community gathering place for meetings, school programs, concerts, plays, and recreation for decades.

Sloughgrass Band
Sloughgrass, a local family band, known for entertaining with a mixture of song and Minnesota humor named themselves from playing bluegrass tunes painfully slow - much like walking through the sloughgrass swamps surrounding their hometown of Birchdale. Not only has the group played with the acclaimed Minnesota band, Monroe Crossing, they model their performances in the same fashion as well.

WARD MERRILL
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, BACKUS COMMUNITY CENTER

After serving as a social studies teacher and community education director for 34 years in the Blackduck Public Schools, Ward Merrill and his wife Linda retired and moved to International Falls in 2005, purchasing his grandparent's home. They wasted no time getting involved in various organizations and lending their energy and passion to the community. Ward began serving on the International Falls Bass Championship Board in 2005 and has been an important player in the on-going success of that event.
