Greetings from International Falls and Koochiching County, gateway to Voyageurs National Park! Welcome to our first e-newsletter. As the director of the Koochiching Economic Development Authority (KEDA), it is my intention to use this communication tool to provide periodic updates on opportunities, events, and the people of Koochiching County to those individuals and businesses that may be interested in locating here...

Imagine a process that could take municipal solid waste and in an environmentally safe process transform it into steam and other useful by-products. Koochiching County and the City of International Falls are supporting the creation of the Renewable Energy Clean Air Project (RECAP) that utilizes plasma gasification technology to transform the waste into energy. As our landfills continue to fill and the cost of land-filling increases, RECAP represents an environmental and economic solution. The county and city have partnered with Coronal, LLC to try to make RECAP a reality.

Koochiching County Celebrates a Century - By Douglas P. Skrief

Koochiching County is looking back, and with good reason. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the county's founding. Celebratory events to mark the birthday have already occurred and more are planned for the months to come. The celebrations mark the end of a fight for division of what was once Minnesota's largest county, Itasca. And the fight had at its crux a myriad of economic concerns.

Economic development in Koochiching County has a big supporter in International Falls Mayor Shawn Mason. Born and raised in International Falls, Mayor Mason first became involved in local government in 1997 after coming to the realization that leadership should be shared and government would be more effective if it were more "citizen driven." Serving as the first female mayor of her hometown, Mayor Mason has brought her style of public inclusion to every office she has held.
