KEDA Update

Summer is in full glory here in Minnesota's Vacation Paradise, and visitors and residents relish the long days and warm temperatures to fish, golf, camp, pontoon, and explore the many waterways here. Summer in the northland is also a time for the many festivals, fairs, and events that celebrate our traditions and culture.

Yet, in spite of all of the good karma that summer brings, the economic downturn has affected every corner of the country. The good news for International Falls and Koochiching County is that several projects continue to move forward - despite the difficult economy. In this newsletter, we'll introduce you to two women who took a hobby from the kitchen to retail stores, a local artist who works in many forms, including glass work, and the re-birth of the Northome city offices and municipal liquor store.

From gift giving... to friendship... to partnership...

Two talented International Falls women turn gift giving into a lucrative business. What started out as a love of roasted red pepper jam for Brenda Jones, over time, evolved into "Lakeside Gourmet." Jones started experimenting with pepper jam recipes as a hobby; giving jam as gifts to family and friends. After gifting a jar of jalapeņo-green pepper jam to friend, Colleen Fletcher, the two began making jam together for family and friends. They later decided to share their creations with the world and formed their business Lakeside Gourmet in September of 2007. Their first sales were at a local craft show in December of 2007 which was a big success. They learned quickly the key to selling was simply offering samples because the product has a unique taste that sells itself.

Riverside Glassworks

Local Artist, Lisa Jenkins began painting at the young age of seven, delving in oils, acrylics and watercolors. As the years progressed, she added lithography, drawing, collage and design to her repertoire, leaning toward abstract symbolism. In 1977 Jenkins graduated with a degree in Fine Arts and then followed her appreciation for art by studying Art History at the University of South Florida in Tampa, focusing on Abstract Art, Expressionism and Women Artists.
