Winter in Koochiching County: A Tradition of Friends, Family and Fun

There is something truly unbelievable about pulling a fish out of a hole in the ice while you are standing on a lake. It seems a bit unreal, not only just the first time, but time and time again as your bobber sinks and there is nothing but a strand of fishing line connecting you with a walleye thirty feet below.

Ice fishing on Rainy Lake is not only an opportunity to enjoy the thrill of the chase and savor the victory of a trophy fish, it is also a chance to reconnect with friends and family, relax and enjoy the peace of the lake during the winter months.

In icehouse villages, portable shelters, and in the open air, men and women of all ages drill holes, drop lines and wait for that familiar tug. And although the energy and excitement of catching a fish is its own unique bit of fun, the waiting is a pretty good time too. A warm beverage, good conversation, and disappearance of the commotion of everyday life make these moments on the frozen lake truly remarkable.

Winter in Koochiching County offers more than just spectacular scenery, it provides the opportunity to visit remote places by snowmobile, the chance to hear nothing but the sound of your own breath as you snowshoe or cross-country ski in the crisp winter air, and the prospect of spending an entire day with nothing to do but watch a bobber float.

For the lucky ones, these winter events are Saturday morning rituals or recurring Tuesday evening treats. For others they are the features of a seasonal vacation. Whether you come by car, snowmobile or plane, the recreation and relaxation of winter in the borderland is beyond compare.
